When The Going Gets Weird, The Weird Turn Pro

By  |

The title of this post is a quote from legendary journalist Hunter S. Thompson, a figure whom the present author reveres, especially in my current capacity. Thompson wrote quite extensively about politics, especially during the Nixon years, and hence found his time period to be especially worthy of that observation.

But we can pity Thompson now, because had he lived through the present time, he would have been even more tickled. With interesting timing, Slate magazine has posted about how paranoia is a natural side effect of people feeling politically powerless. That may or may not be the case; statistics in psychological surveys are rarely something to set your clock by. However, one can definitely say that when the going gets weird, the weird do tend to come out of the closet and get a lot more attention.

Take, for instance, the CRAZY CEO Robert Bigelow, who is running around yelling that aliens from outer space are here on Earth, man! And take, for the other instance, the STUPID news outlets who keep printing his story. He’s gotten into The Washington Times, there he is on CBS, and of course on The Independent.

He has lots of money, so he might be right about everything! This is the time we live in. It is so crazy that you can run down the street raving about aliens and instead of being dismissed as a kook, you get prime time coverage. Throughout US history, various waves of popular belief in craziness has followed trying political times. And we are in one of those times.
